Simple, flexible and remote

What is IO-Link

IO-link is simply flexible - optimisation of the production process through communication down to the lowest field level. Flexibility, process optimisation and ease of remote maintenance are important performance parameters of machines and plants. Thanks to sensors with IO-link, the lower field level is now also accessible to the plant operator. With minimal costs, it is possible to call up sensor information, parameters and diagnostics in order to optimally evaluate the plant status. The very powerful point-to-point communication of IO-link is based on the well-known three-wire sensor connection without any additional requirements for cabling. IO-link is therefore not a field bus, but an extension of today's reliable sensor connection technology. IO-link is a serial bi-directional point-to-point connection for signal transmission and power supply among any networks and field buses.

Increasing efficiency

Cost-saving assembly and commissioning

By using sensors with IO-link, the costs for installation and commissioning can be reduced. This is achieved by simplifying cabling and automating the duplication and retention of parameters. Serially produced cables are used for assembly, which means that in-house production is no longer necessary and potential errors can be avoided. Commissioning is also automated, where parameters can be downloaded in a split second and are available in the device. The simplicity of installation and fieldbus independence is what users appreciate about IO-Link. This significantly reduces cabling costs and each sensor can be identified individually due to the consistent data retention of the parameters. This also greatly reduces the costs of troubleshooting.

IO-Link technology is widely applicable.

Downtimes belong to the past

Integrated diagnostic system

The time when installations unexpectedly stopped working due to a defective sensor is over. Because thanks to the integrated diagnostic mechanism, the status of sensors can be recognised and remedied in good time. The functions included in the sensors, such as running time counter, max/min display and sensor breakage and short-circuit recognition, contribute to timely evaluation and anticipation of the sensor status. This considerably increases the efficiency of the installation. With IO-link there is the possibility to exchange both cyclic and a-cyclic data with higher levels. For example, parameter data can be loaded into a sensor in operating mode and diagnostic data can be read out in reverse. With a transmission rate of 230.4 kBaud and a cycle time of 2 ms, data is exchanged quickly and available within seconds.

Cost effective

Exchange errors belong to the past

IO-link prevents exchange errors. The parameter settings of the sensors are stored above them so that they are automatically transferred during exchange. Each IO-link sensor has a Device-ID. These IDs describe different properties of the sensor. Thus, different measuring ranges and accuracy classes can be recognised at the same time and one knows which IODD file can be used. IODD File for pressure sensors can be found here. IODD file for temperature sensors can be found here. All other IODD files can be found here. This offers great advantages during installation because faulty sensors are immediately recognised and can be exchanged. Installation downtimes are thus avoided, resulting in considerable cost savings. JUMO currently offers IO-Link sensors for temperature, pressure, and conductivity.

OPC UA

Industry 4.0 in high gear

In 'smart factories', good communication between machines, devices and software is crucial. The OPC communication protocol is the best way to accelerate 'Industry 4.0'. What is the strength of OPC UA? OPC UA (IEC 62541) was developed from day 1 for industrial applications. This is demonstrated by the possibility to let PLC-specific protocols like Modbus and Profibus communicate with all kinds of special industrial devices via industrial SCADA/HMI systems.

The strengths of OPC UA

Safe, reliable and accessible

OPC UA is an open standard without any dependence on vendors or specific technologies. Robust security: OPC UA technology uses proven security concepts that protect against unauthorised access, sabotage, modification and careless use of process data. Reliability and accessibility: OPC UA provides a robust architecture with reliable communication mechanisms, adjustable timeouts and automatic error detection. In case of errors, special mechanisms restore the communication link without loss of data. Availability of information: With OPC UA, any type of information is available to any authorised user anytime, anywhere". The protocol has already been integrated into numerous devices ranging from sensors to MES and ERP systems and is supported by many automation suppliers.

Sustainable future with IO-Link

Construction of new biogas plant in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen

Biogas application

A biogas plant is being built in Westdorpe on the Axelse Vlakte industrial estate. The initiator of this project is Jan Aben. Together with his brother Toine, he runs the family business Aben B.V., originally an agricultural business with dairy cows, meat pigs and arable farming. Over the years, they have expanded the business and started a bio-digester in order to contribute to a sustainable society. Jan has his eye on the Axelse Vlakte for a new business, because there is a lot of biomass in the area.

Reusing residual flows

He mentions the starch factory Cargill in Sas van Gent as a possible supplier. The idea is to produce residual flows from companies such as Cargill - which processes a lot of maize - and from companies in the greenhouse horticulture sector, and to upgrade these so that they can be supplied to the public grid. "The government wants to make the economy more sustainable and for us to use fewer fossil raw materials such as natural gas," explains Jan Aben. Gasifying biomass is an environmentally friendly alternative. Aben wants to start processing 100,000 tonnes of biomass annually. JUMO's IO-Link temperature sensors are used to monitor the temperature in the biomass storage.

Government subsidy

Construction of new biogas plant in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen

Biogas application

"Government subsidy within the framework of the stimulation of sustainable energy production (sde), is necessary in order to run profitably. Otherwise you can't compete with ordinary gas," says Jan Aben. For a number of green projects in Zeeland, the government has earmarked a total of more than 143 million euros in subsidies for the installation of solar panels and the construction of biomass plants, among other things. Most of the money goes to Aben's project. Aben Green Energy will receive over 118 million euros for the bio gasifier on the Axelse Vlakte. "The last push we needed," responds Jan. The power station will make use of residual flows. In time, it will employ 10 to 15 people. "We are now going to further develop the plans. The plant will be operational at the earliest by the end of 2018.
